Lobby of W Amsterdam

W Hotel Amsterdam

On my trip to to Amsterdam last weekend, I used the opportunity to check out the recently opened W Amsterdam, a 238-room hotel near the city’s Dam Square. The hotel is split between two historic buildings – the Telephone Exchange building, which was built in 1903 and the Kas Bank building across the street, which was built in 1930. Amsterdam based practice Office Winhov has maintained the original façades and structural features of the two monumental buildings, while interiors by Tel Aviv-based BK Architects incorporates custom fittings by local producers and takes inspiration in part from one of the building’s former life as a telephone exchange. Flipping check in on its head, the top floor lobby in the Telephone Exchange commands 360 degree views over Amsterdam and also houses the W Lounge and the very hip Mr Porter, a riff on the modern steakhouse. I will be returning to Amsterdam in the Spring and will definitely be checking into the W.
