Umami Mart began as a food blog by Kayoko Akabori and Yoko Kumano back in 2007. Over the years it morphed firstly into an online-shop specializing in Japanese bar and kitchenware and then in 2012, Umami Mart opened a flagship Bricks and Mortar store in Oakland, San Francisco.
The Oakland shop, designed by Copenhagen based Studio Arhoj is a light filled space of bare brick walls and blonde wood shelves and tables stacked with barware, kitchen tools, coffee and tea accessories, and tableware – all from Japan.
Umami Mart has near cult status in San Francisco and its curated selection of Japanese homewares are so in demand that it has created a special pop-up Umami Mart at the equally wonderful The Perish Trust on Divisadero Street. Focusing mainly but not entirely on its fantastic bar accessories, the pop up was supposed to run until Christmas but is still going strong.
