Tao Downtown Restaurant by Rockwell Group

Tao Downtown

On a recent trip to New York I got to experience the new Tao Downtown, a sprawling 22,000-square-foot restaurant and lounge nestled in the Maritime Hotel in heart of New York’s Meatpacking District.Designed by Rockwell Group, Tao is spectacular in its sheer ambition. TAO Downtown offers a distinct sense of arrival and discovery. The subterranean multi-level space is intended to look and feel as if it has been there for decades and only unearthed recently to reveal the artefacts within. Once inside the main room, an imposing staircase forms the focal point of the impressive space. Playing off the aged, vintage aesthetic, UK street artist HUSH, renowned for his artful Eastern images of feminine beauty and sensuality, has hand-painted original mixed media murals throughout the cavernous space. Two custom-made Buddhas, over 16-feet in length, bookend the space and keep a watchful eye over the restaurant and its guests. The reclining Buddha greets guests immediately prior to the restaurant revealing itself, while the Quan Yin, replete with 24 hands, sits atop a koi pond, acting as the anchor of the main dining room. She is brought to life through incredible 3D projection mapping technology developed by Rockwell Group’s LAB, so that at time she blinks or slowly becomes covered in moss. Tao Downtown is an incredible experience and I will definitely pay it a repeat visit on my next trip to New York
