Olivier Theyskens: She Walks in Beauty at MoMu Antwerp

Last week while in Antwerp, I dropped into MoMu, Antwerp’s latest show – She Walks in Beauty – a retrospective of the work of designer Olivier Theyskens. Curated by Karen Van Godtsenhoven, the exhibition presents over 100 works and charts the designers career from his debut collections through to his tenure at Rochas and Nina Ricci, where his beautiful highly detailed pieces were dubbed demi-couture. The show also touches upon Theyskens time at the American label Theory before showcasing the designer’s recent eponymous collection. The exhibition is beautifully presented with drawings and Polaroids from fittings and castings giving a real insight into the designer’s creative process. What one really gets to understand from the show is Theyskens incredible ability to create handcrafted couture like pieces as ready-to-wear clothes. The highlight of the show is the most richly detailed yet simple wedding dress that Theyskens handmade for a friend after leaving Theory but before re-establishing his label. She Walks in Beauty is the last show at MoMu before it closes for renovation and is well worth a trip to Antwerp.
