Yesterday we sampled the lovely Mayfields, a cosy neighbourhood restaurant in Hackney. The talented chef Matthew Young is at the helm and has cooked everywhere from The Wapping Project to the iconic gastropub Anchor & Hope – and has even done a stint at the Gramercy Tavern in New York. The inventive menu changes daily with about 10 small plates, each executed to perfection during our dinner. The duck with grapefruit and hazelnuts was one of the most beautiful dishes I’ve seen in some time and I am still dreaming of the rich and earthy smoked eel, served with pickled golden beetroot, pear and horseradish cream, another almost too-gorgeous-to eat creation. Mayfield’s is thankfully a short stroll away from Tomorrow’s HQ and I think its fair to say we’ll be back very soon.
