Heath Ceramics

No visit to San Francisco is complete without a pilgrimage to Heath Ceramics. The original factory, founded by Edith Heath in 1948,is in Sausalito just across the Golden Gate Bridge and the factory shop is well worth a trip.

But thankfully Heath recently opened a new retail space, in the heart of the Mission district. A former linen supply and laundry, the space has been transformed by Mission based Heminger Architects into a factory for Heath Tiles and a retail space for the complete Heath collection. There is also a gallery space, viewing court and fantastic Blue Bottle Coffee café – serving the best coffee in San Francisco.

Edith’s original intention was to make simple, good things for good people and today this artisan pottery including tableware, bowls, tiles, mugs and vases is still made in the same way in the same factory and its simple shapes in a hue of beautiful colours are famous throughout the world. Heath Ceramics is a great example of the fact that truly great design never goes out of style.
