Hauser & Wirth Somerset

This weekend I decamped to Bruton, Somerset, just a few hours drive from London, and an increasingly talked about destination due in large part to the opening of Hauser & Wirth. The fifth outpost for Swiss gallerists Iwan & Manuela Wirth, the Somerset location sits on a beautifully restored 18th Century farm and houses an extraordinary art space, restaurant, book shop, B&B and sculpture garden. The Wirths have gathered a dream team of creative talents, including Paris-based architect Luis Laplace and landscape designer Piet Oudolf – of New York’s High Line fame. Every feature and design element has been so thoughtfully considered. During my visit the gallery had its second round of shows (it first opened in July) including an unforgettable installation by video artist Pipilotti Rist, who did a year long residency in Somerset and filmed her footage there. John Chamberlain’s Gondolas, also on view, have been made from repurposed car parts and inspired by American poets and sit alongside their text. After a walk around the grounds, I had a delicious Sunday lunch at Hauser & Wirth’s restaurant, Roth Bar – a perfect ending to a great weekend in the country.
