Guy Bourdin: Image Maker

This weekend I finally made it to the latest blockbuster show of the visionary photographer Guy Bourdin at Somerset House. I have been an avid fan of Bourdin’s beautiful yet unsettling work since 2010 when I promoted an installation of his photographs at The Wapping Project. Through that project I met one of Bourdin’s favourite models, Nicolle Meyer. So it was with great joy I realised that many of the images on show at the Somerset House exhibition, Guy Bourdin: Image Maker, feature this amazing woman. The show has over 200 works, many of which have never been shown before, including a number of films, paintings, polaroids, sketches and notebooks, which help you understand Bourdin’s working process. The sheer volume of evocative imagery on show is overwhelming and it is clear to see how Bourdin has influenced the work of photographers such as Tim Walker. Bourdin’s work is as moving today as it was when I first became aware of it.
