Model of Vita Design Museum by Frank Gehry

Frank Gehry at Centre Pompidou

While in Paris last week for Maison et Objet, I seized the opportunity to see the new Frank Gehry retrospective at Richard Rogers/Renzo Piano’s iconic Centre Pompidou. The first major European retrospective of Gehry’s work and timed to the opening of his new building in Paris for the Fondation Louis Vuitton, the show features 225 drawings, 67 models and chronicles 60 major projects since he first started his office in Los Angeles in the early 1960s. All the iconic buildings are here – the Guggenheim Bilbao, The Walt Disney Concert Hall in LA and my favourite – and Gehry’s first European building – the Vitra Museum. The exhibition does not rely on any show stopping staging but simply presents models and sketches for projects both realised and unrealized. Nonetheless the sheer volume of work on display is breathtaking and a fitting celebration of one of the world’s most iconic architects.
