Dior and I

Dior and I

I recently had a chance to see an advance screening of the new fashion documentary Dior and I – an incredible behind-the-scenes look at Raf Simons’ first haute couture collation for Dior. Shot in the pressured eight week lead up to Simons’ debut runway show for the historic fashion house, the film is a fascinating look at the designer’s creative process, drawing influence from the DNA of the brand as well as favourite artists like Gerhard Richter and Sterling Ruby to give the collection his own, modern signature. What really makes the film work is the level of access the director, Frederic Tcheng, had to Simons and his team. It gives a truly genuine, unfiltered look at the ups and downs of what it means to step into the shoes of Creative Director of Dior. But the highlight for me was watching the collaboration between the design team and the brilliant and often overlooked seamstresses of the atelier. Having spent as long as four decades in the atelier, they are really at the heart and soul of the fashion house.
