The Bert & May story began with a love of tiles. Falling for the traditional encaustic tile while renovating a boutique hotel in Andalucia, founder Lee Thornley discovered a defunct tile-making studio in the foothills of the Sierra de Cadiz and brought it back to life. Today Bert & May specialises in contemporary tiles handmade in the same way they have been for many decades, whilst still scouring Spain and the rest of Europe for exceptional reclaimed tiles. This love of the reclaimed and the patina of authentic design materials mean that today the company’s East London warehouse is one of the largest sources of reclaimed tiles and wooden flooring in the UK. The Bert & May story continues to evolve with a soon to launch nature-inspired palette of chalky paints and a collection of architect designed kitchens.
